My journey began at 12 with scoliosis, a condition necessitating multiple spinal surgeries. In 2016 alone, I underwent four spinal surgeries for issues ranging from aborted initial attempts to infections and implant stabilisation. In 2022, broken implants required further surgery and a prolonged recovery. Most recently, I faced potential surgery again, with unbearable, constant pain severely limiting my mobility even with medication, as specialists investigated the suspected impact on the vertebra below my spinal fusion.
These early years were marked by confusion and frustration, with frequent misdiagnosis and the feeling of a life irrevocably altered by pain. The extensive surgeries and ongoing pain contributed to periods of depression and anxiety, especially after a 12-day ICU stay where I felt unheard and disempowered by some medical staff.

Eventually, self-help became crucial alongside medical treatment. The increased openness around mental health encouraged me to explore alternative therapies. Chinese medicine and yoga offered some relief, and I've incorporated meditation and journaling, practices I consistently return to because I recognise their benefit. Despite this, advocating for my needs within the medical system remains a struggle, a personal challenge that fuels my passion for advocating for others facing similar battles.
My experiences, particularly living with scoliosis and navigating multiple spinal surgeries, have profoundly shifted my perspective on health, wellness, and the mind-body connection. I've become more attuned to my body and have actively researched both conventional and non-medical approaches to pain management. This journey has fostered a more open-minded approach to my well-being, guided by the understanding that while medical professionals offer vital support, my active participation is essential.
I've learned that human resilience is robust, though it requires consistent effort.
